About Us

Channel Islands Cetacean Research Unit is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Santa Barbara, California. While formally organized in July 2013, the director, Michelle Kowalewski ran a similar program through the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History since 2002.

During her tenure at the museum, Michelle developed a bio-surveillance program conducting thorough investigations into the mortality of whales, dolphins, and porpoises. This program produced quantitative results on toxin, bio-toxin, heavy metal, and disease burdens in the local cetacean population. CICRU continues this bio-surveillance while expanding the education and research potentials.
